The four volumes of Discussions of Robert Lewis Dabney were written between 1890–1897. The first of these four volumes, a collection of shorter essays, begins with a theological and evangelical study. Dabney’s convincing essays include topics such as Bible translations, God’s grace, and the Sabbath.

In the discussion of these charges, the traits of exaggeration and inconsistency which have been imputed to them will be abundantly evinced. As disconnected specimens, the reader may, by anticipation, take the following: Notes on Genesis, page 39, pervert the words that Adam and Eve knew good and evil after they transgressed, as teaching that then only they acquired a conscience!
